New Forest to London trains: 1hr 32, £7,988 a year

Every New Forest train to London goes to Waterloo, and every one of them is run by South Western Railway. There is no second route and no second terminal, so the only real questions are which station you start from, how long it takes and what it costs, and the answers vary more between New Forest stations than most people expect.

The short version: Brockenhurst is the fastest station in the district and the one worth driving to. The best time we recorded was 1 hour 32 minutes to Waterloo, with two direct trains an hour for most of the day. An annual season from Brockenhurst is £7,988. Below are the checked times and fares for every station on the line, and where the cheaper options sit.

Brockenhurst to London Waterloo

Brockenhurst is the district’s interchange. Main-line trains to Waterloo call there roughly twice an hour, and the Lymington branch feeds into it.

Times we recorded on the National Rail timetable for a weekday, Tuesday 11 August 2026, via traintimes.org.uk:

• Fastest of the day: 1 hour 32 minutes (21:14 arriving 22:46).
• Typical off-peak: 1 hour 35 to 1 hour 37 minutes, leaving at :14 and :44 past most hours.
• Morning peak: 1 hour 36 to 1 hour 45 minutes. The 06:11 gets in at 07:47, the 07:09 at 08:48.
• First train: 05:37, arriving 07:26.
• Last direct train back from Waterloo: 23:35, arriving 01:31.

If you need to be at a desk in the City for 09:00, the 07:09 into Waterloo at 08:48 is the practical last option, and the 06:40 (arriving 08:19) is the comfortable one.

What Brockenhurst costs

Walk-up fares to London Terminals, from the National Rail fares shown against those services:

• Anytime Day Single: £62.40. Anytime Day Return: £123.80.
• Off-Peak Return: £67.30. This is the number that matters for a day out. It is little more than half the Anytime return, and it applies from mid-morning.
• Off-Peak Day Travelcard: £79.60, which adds unlimited Tube and bus travel in zones 1 to 6 for £12.30 more than the plain off-peak return.
• Advance singles from £30.00 if you book ahead and commit to a specific train.

Season tickets, from Trainline:

• Weekly £199.70, monthly £766.90, annual £7,988.00 to London Terminals.
• Annual £9,136.00 for the version that includes a zones 1 to 6 Travelcard.

The £1,148 gap between those two annual tickets is the price of your Tube travel. If you walk from Waterloo, or your onward journey is one river crossing, the plain London Terminals season is the one to buy.

Every New Forest station, compared

Times come from the National Rail timetable for Tuesday 11 August 2026 and season prices from Trainline, both checked this month. Hinton Admiral is the eighth station on this stretch of line; its service is sparse enough that the timetable search returned no through option in the windows we tried, so check it directly with National Rail rather than assuming a pattern.

Three things fall out of that table.

Totton is the cheapest and the fastest. It is a Southampton-edge station rather than a forest one, and it beats Brockenhurst by four minutes and £428 a year. If you live in Totton, Marchwood or the north of the Waterside, there is no case for driving into the forest to catch a train.

Lymington costs more than Brockenhurst and takes 35 minutes longer. The branch train to Brockenhurst is a nine-minute shuttle, but the connection and the wait add up. Plenty of Lymington commuters drive the six miles to Brockenhurst instead, which is why Brockenhurst car park matters.

New Milton is the most expensive season on the list at £8,320 and still nearly two hours. West of Brockenhurst the trains stop more often and the clock runs.

Parking, and the Brockenhurst squeeze

National Rail lists 236 parking spaces at Brockenhurst, including six accessible bays, plus bicycle storage and bicycle hire at the station. For the district’s main interchange, serving commuters from Lymington, Sway, Boldre and the forest villages, 236 spaces is not a generous allowance, and it fills on weekday mornings.

Two practical alternatives. Sway and New Milton are quieter stations on the same line if you only need to get on a train rather than get on the fastest one. And the Lymington branch exists precisely so you do not have to drive: the shuttle from Lymington Town to Brockenhurst takes nine minutes and connects into the London services.

Getting to the Isle of Wight

The branch does not stop at Lymington Town. It carries on to Lymington Pier, where the Wightlink ferry crosses to Yarmouth. That makes a train-and-ferry trip from Waterloo to the Isle of Wight possible without a car, and it is the reason the branch survived when similar lines closed.
